Unlike most, it was never built over: t…The forum was laid out in the first century under Augustus and is the largest Roman square on this side of the Adriatic. Unlike most, it was never built over: the paving, the column bases and the fragments of the temple podium lie open to the sky in the middle of the peninsula, with St Donatus and the cathedral standing on and beside them.

One column still stands at the corner, the medieval pillory to which offenders were chained. There is no ticket and no gate; the forum is simply the square, crossed by everyone on their way to the waterfront.
