Zadar Historical landmarks

Zadar wears three thousand years in about six hundred metres. The forum, laid out under Augustus and the largest Roman square on this side of the Adriatic, was never built over, so its paving and column bases lie open in the middle of the peninsula with a medieval pillory column still standing at one corner. A few minutes away the Five Wells Square holds the well heads of the cistern that carried the city through the Ottoman sieges.

At the western tip the landmarks are recent and just as busy. The Sea Organ turns the swell into sound through pipes under the marble steps, and the Greeting to the Sun stores daylight in a disc of glass panels and spends it after dark. Neither charges, both were finished in the last twenty years, and between them they explain why the entire waterfront fills every evening in season.
