There is no hill here. The Old Town is a low peninsula about six hundred metres across, which means the wide views come from two places: something built tall, or the walls. The cathedral bell tower is the tall one, climbed by stair for a fee, and from the top the forum, the round church of St Donatus and the tiled roofs line up with the channel and the islands behind them.

The other option costs nothing. The bastion above the Five Wells Square carries the oldest public park in Dalmatia, laid out in 1829, and its promenades run along the top of the fortification looking over the walls and the harbour. At ground level the waterfront does the rest of the work: the western tip faces the open channel and takes the sunset that the Sea Organ and the light disc were built around.
