Pharmacies are spread across the peninsula and the main districts, with at least one duty pharmacy open around the clock for anything urgent.
This section covers the one thing on a visitor's list that is not a choice: finding a pharmacy. Croatian pharmacies, ljekarna on the sign, dispense prescription medicines and also sell a far wider range of remedies over the counter than a UK or US visitor might expect, so a pharmacist is usually the first stop for sunburn, stomach upsets, insect bites and minor infections before anyone considers a doctor. Staff in the city centre generally speak English, and many common medicines sold under other brand names at home are available here under Croatian or European ones, so it helps to know the active ingredient rather than the brand.
There are branches on and immediately around the peninsula, along the main roads through Relja and Bili Brig, and at Borik near the hotels. Normal hours run from early morning to around eight in the evening on weekdays with shorter Saturdays, and the rota system keeps one pharmacy in the city open overnight and on Sundays, posted on the door of every other branch. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card; everyone else should expect to pay and claim back on travel insurance.
