A Croatian pharmacy, ljekarna, is the first stop for anything short of an emergency, and the green cross is the sign to look for. Pharmacists train to advise as well as dispense, speak workable English in a city with this many visitors, and can sell a good deal over the counter that would need a prescription elsewhere, including some antibiotics creams and stronger painkillers. For sunburn, jellyfish stings, sea urchin spines and stomach trouble, the pharmacy is the right door rather than a clinic.

Branches sit on the peninsula and through the mainland districts, with at least one running a duty rota so there is always somewhere open at night and on Sunday. European health insurance cards are accepted at the state pharmacies for prescriptions; over the counter purchases are paid in cash or by card. Bring the generic name of any regular medication, since brand names differ.
