Zadar Bakeries

The bakery is the first thing open in a Croatian town and the cheapest breakfast in it. Counters run from around six, selling bread by weight, burek in coils of pastry filled with cheese, meat or spinach, and the sweet end of the range: krafne, doughnuts and pastries by the piece. Two euros buys breakfast; five feeds two people well.

They cluster where people actually walk to work, which means the mainland streets and the market end of the peninsula more than the tourist lanes. Burek is sold by weight from a tray and reheated on request, and the good ones sell out by mid morning. For a self-catering stay the bakery replaces the hotel breakfast entirely, and for a boat trip it supplies the thing to eat on deck before the first island.
