Coffee here is a social obligation rather than a caffeine run, and the seat matters more than the cup. The terraces along Siroka ulica, the street everyone calls Kalelarga, fill from mid morning and stay full; Narodni trg puts tables against the Renaissance guard house and the city loggia; and the Riva faces the channel and the islands, which is why its prices sit a little above the lanes behind it. Ordering a coffee buys the table for as long as you want it, and nobody will move you off it.
Away from the peninsula the pattern changes. Varos keeps small neighbourhood places where the crowd is local and the football is on, Borik and Puntamika serve the beach and hotel traffic, and there are a few late rooms near the university at Relja. Most places open by seven for the working crowd and many pour the first spritz around noon, so the line between a cafe and a bar in this city is thin.
